Jan Moncrieff

As the great granddaughter of a Glasgow fiddle maker, music was a part of Jan’s life from the day she was born.

A child of the sixties (now wishing she had been a teenager of the sixties) Jan played and sang all types of music ranging from traditional Scottish and folk to jazz, pop, rock and classical.

Her father felt that playing Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik to her every night when she was an infant would expand her musical soul... maybe it did!?

Jan is also a keen photographer and you can see some of her photographs at the link below.

Phil McCready

Northern Irish with a bit of Scots from his grandparents, Phil was also a child of the sixties and more importantly for him, a teenage band member of the seventies playing bass guitar (which he swapped his train set for!) and 6/12 string guitars. Although never making it big the band were always in great demand for weddings and dinner dances and often supported big name local artists.

Phil was, and is, into all types of melodic music - country, folk, pop and traditional Irish and Scottish music. He is also a keen videographer and photographer and you can see some of his work at the links below.

Beers Law

Jan and Phil started working together in 1989 and soon discovered they had very similar musical tastes. They began going to local folk clubs and soon started playing as a duo.

They decided on the name Beers Law as it tied in neatly with their “day jobs” working with lasers and their liking of the odd pint!

At the turn of the 21st century, with Alan McLean, they took a self penned Celtic folk opera, Pictures of Uncle Donnie’s Wake, to the Edinburgh Fringe, where they performed 2 years running to positive reviews, particularly from the Glasgow based press [YouTube Videos].

Beers Law tracks have been posted on the BBC Celtic Roots site and, with Alan McLean, as The Crow Road Band, have been played on radio stations across the world... New Zealand, USA , Canada…

Jan and Phil now live in Lochaber, Scotland and play at venues in the Great Glen and beyond!
